All our questions so far, which we often
hear, have circled around our way of
functioning, what we think, why we do
like this and not like that. After
having tried to answer these questions,
we would like to pose another question,
namely who is really seeking whom. The
very starting-point in a “pilgrim’s
progress” is not the response of the
traveller but the calling of God. The
journey in itself is not decisive to its
result but the obedience fostered by
faith along the way.
“This is love: not that we loved God,
but that he loved us and sent his Son as
an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1
John 4:10)
Sometimes, we imagine that we are
seeking God and will find spiritual
answers if we are only serious enough in
our seeking. In reality, God himself has
chosen mankind and given it the only
answer there is to find, his son Jesus
Christ, who is the way, truth and life.
An encounter with him brings out
discipleship or denial. He calls, and we
become disciples or leave him. He leads
and we follow. The Bible talks about the
obedience of faith being restored among
all peoples. God’s personality has
always changed those who follow him. The
Christian church is therefore always
ultimately God’s project and not that of
human beings. |
